Here’s what’s happening in January in Africa:
East Africa
- Vegetation is verdant, flowers are out in full bloom and
the grasslands lush, it’s a brief time of bounty for many animals. - It’s a wonderful month for a safari in northern Tanzania, especially the southern Serengeti as the migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra start to gather in huge numbers.

Southern Africa
- For birders, January is a peak month to enjoy the
mind-boggling numbers of migrating and local birds attracted to Botswana’s Chobe and Okavango regions, it’s a twitchers’ paradise! - The Chobe area also offers a bonanza for elephant lovers this time of year.
- It’s the middle of the rainy season, so you can expect warm days and afternoon thunderstorms.
- An ideal month for photography with the sharp contrast of the predators’ natural winter camouflage with the colorful summer colors of the landscape.
- If you’re visiting the Victoria Falls, it’s your last chance to leap into Devil’s Pool.
Cape Town & Surroundings
- January is a great time to enjoy warm summer weather,
outdoor concerts in Kirstenbosch (Cape Town), or picnic on the beach. - Check dates for Stellenbosch Street Soirees in the City of Oaks for some laidback mingling with fellow food and wine lovers. (Insider tip: January is also a great time to browse around the town while most of the 30,000+ student population is still on summer vacation.)
