“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
You may fully expect a safari in Africa to be a remarkable experience, but time and again it stands out as simply the “greatest time of all time“. Lest we take it for granted, we like to look back at some of these adventures, the words they’ve inspired and the indelible memories they’ve spawned.
Kenya has always viewed its wildlife as a national treasure. And the movie “Out of Africa” did much to cement the romance of Kenya in our minds. A diverse country, Kenya offers many rewards for the first-time, as well as the seasoned, safari traveler. Magnificent wildlife, excellent accommodations, palm-fringed beaches and a warm and friendly population await you.
Channa Beth’s Most Memorable Moment: Loved following the cheetahs for an hour and a half, then watching the kill and staying while they ate it – Mara The male lion dragging his Topi almost to our car and eating it while swatting 2 cubs away-Mara Wild dogs running, running, running and enjoying a kill-Samburu
As you travel through Botswana, you discover a land of contrasts. The Okavango Delta forms the nucleus and heartbeat of this treasure house of wildlife. Explore the area on foot, in a 4×4 or on a traditional mokoro (canoe). In sharp contrast, but equally fascinating, you can also visit the vast white salt pans and the grasslands of the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans, or the seemingly endless Kalahari Desert with its orange sand and scant vegetation.
Ike and Solveig’s Most Memorable Moment: Multiple memories mostly from the game drives. The thrill of the first time the lions came within touching distance from the open land rover or the elephant strolling past our tent in the afternoon, who could forget about the baboons playing on the roof of our tent or laying awake at night listening to two prides of lions challenging roars and then to find lion prints in our camp.
Largely unspoiled and teeming with wildlife, Zimbabwe is unmistakably still the best of real Africa. From the mighty Victoria Falls, to pristine game parks and the rolling hills of the Eastern Highlands, and the rock art of the Matobo region, Zimbabwe is a breathtakingly beautiful country. The traveler to Zimbabwe is likely to see a diversity of habitats offering sights such as giant baobab trees, picturesque river fronts, large herds of elephant and buffalo, sable and roan antelope and a variety of predators.

Jessica’s Most Memorable Moment: While my husband had been before, this was my first safari. The first afternoon, when we saw lions right away was like nothing I’ve experienced. Being a few yards from a male was not something I could prepare myself for and was so incredibly awe-inspiring. Similarly, every time we asked Charles to see something at Little Mak, he magically made it happen! I asked if there were cheetahs and 1 hour later we were looking at two boys. I asked if there were wild dogs and 2 minutes later we saw three chasing a hyena. It was like it was on demand!
There are few countries in the world that compare with South Africa’s scenic splendor and diversity of leisure options: game reserves, mountain resorts, spectacular beaches and cosmopolitan cities offer a variety of experiences for all interests. So whether you want to relax and soak up the sunshine at a vineyard; follow in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela; or follow a quest for wild adventure, South Africa has everything you are looking for and more.
Carol and Kevin’s Most Memorable Moment: For me, seeing the cheetahs at Tswalu, A mom and her 4 cubs and later on two brothers. I could have watched them for hours. Kevin preferred the leopards at Kruger.
From Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, to Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, travelers will find Tanzania a country with vast and breathtaking vistas. The complete African safari experience is truly represented in game reserves and national parks such as the Serengeti, the annual setting of the wondrous wildebeest migration; Ngorongoro Crater, the unique, biodiverse amphitheatre; Selous Game Reserve, the vast and least well known park, and the amazing array of birdlife at Lake Manyara.
Mary and Don’s Most Memorable Moment: Again, a very hard question, but I’ll try. I met my adopted baby elephant at the Sheldrick Trust Orphanage, got “kissed” by a giraffe at the Nairobi Giraffe Center, saw herds and herds of elephants in Amboseli (I love elephants!), saw a mother cheetah and her two cubs, saw a mother lion and her two cubs, and watched a huge male lion run in front of our vehicle to chase away a jackal and hyena who was trying to eat its kill.
