Packing For Your Safari in Winter

With the peak safari season approaching, we’d like to offer some tips on packing for your safari during wintertime (May–August) in Africa. It is a beautiful time to go on safari as the days are warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit, but the nights can be cool, with temperatures dropping down to the 40s or even 30s. Keep in mind that it can be quite chilly on a morning or evening game drive in an open safari vehicle. While the lodge will provide blankets and hot water bottles to keep you cozy, dressing in layers is very important. Here are some suggestions on what to pack to keep you warm and comfortable on safari.

  • A warm jacket or coat. A down jacket or puffer jacket is ideal for keeping you warm in the cold weather and doesn’t take up much space in your luggage.
  • Lightweight fleece or sweatshirt
  • Thin waterproof layer/windbreaker
  • A hat, scarf and gloves (to keep your hands warm when you’re taking pictures or holding your binos!)
  • Thermal underwear
  • Flannel pajama bottoms for the chilly nights
  • Warm socks
