Overview

This delightful safari itinerary incorporates several of the highlights Zimbabwe's wilderness and wildlife. Begin with two night at the lovely Batonka Guest House, close to the Victoria Falls and lively town center. Your first safari stop is Hwange, home to some of southern Africa’s last great elephant, buffalo and sable herds as well as Cecil's remaining pride. Explore this vast wilderness on foot or in a 4x4 vehicle. You will stay at Little Makalolo Camp located in the heart of one of the best game viewing areas in Hwange National Park. Overlooking a vibrant waterhole, it offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. Finally, you will fly by light aircraft to Mana Pools National Park, located on the Zambezi River, offering superb wildlife viewing and vistas.  Here you can combine a river safari, canoeing, walking and driving to spot the Big Five and more. You'll stay at Ruckomechi Camp, which looks out from the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. It is a remote, beautiful place with spectacular views of the broad flowing river, adjoining well-defined tree canopy and the mountains of the Rift Valley escarpment over the border in Zambia.

Set in lush gardens, a tranquil haven away from the bustle of town but within easy walking distance of the main attractions. The lodge offers 27 well-appointed rooms with elegant, contemporary style decor encompassing Victoria Falls’ colonial past and African flavour. All rooms are air-conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms as well as a private balcony/patio looking out onto the gardens.

Situated in western Zimbabwe, the Hwange National Park is the country’s biggest reserve, home to a profusion of wildlife, including giraffe, lion, zebra and approximately 40 000 elephants.A charming, intimate camp in the south-east of Hwange, “Little Mak” features prominently on the mental maps of local wildlife, all drawn to its reliable waterhole. A log-pile hide affords unique, thrilling close-up views of elephants, and habitat diversity ensures year-round wildlife.
Activities focus on game drives and morning nature walks. The many waterholes produce amazing sightings, or guests can relax in camp and wait for wildlife to come to them. The six spacious en-suite tents (including a family tent) are only surpassed in the experience stakes by the opportunity to sleep out at the Madison Pan star bed.

Insider's Tip

Visit the log-pile hide between game drives to enjoy close up viewing of wildlife at the productive waterhole. Elephants are often the star attraction so make sure you have your camera ready…

Located in northern Zimbabwe, the life-giving power of the Zambezi River makes Mana Pools National Park one of Zimbabwe’s most lush and flourishing regions. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is known for its natural beauty and as one of the continent’s premier game-viewing areas. Located in the legendary Mana Pools National Park, Ruckomechi enjoys incredible views across the Zambezi to the towering escarpment on the Zambian side of the river. Albida trees provide both shade and seed pods that are beloved of elephants, meaning that these charismatic creatures are never far away.
Guest accommodation consists of ten spacious en-suite tented units, including two family units, and open 4×4 vehicles, motorised pontoon boats, canoes and good old safari boots facilitate the wildlife viewing. The camp even features a secluded outdoor bath for a luxurious sensory experience. Ruckomechi is open throughout the dry (winter) season.

Insider's Tip

A boat cruise along the mighty Zambezi is a wonderful way to see wildlife and waterbirds from a different perspective. For the more adventurous – there’s the option of canoeing along this famous river!
