Rwanda – Land of a Thousand Hills
13 Days 12 Nights$16975 - $22375Following your arrival into Kigali, and an overnight to adjust to Africa time, your itinerary begins with a tour of Kigali including the Genocide Museum, offering you insight into Rwanda's turbulent history as well as a cultural visit during your full day in the city. Then your safari begins in earnest as you travel to Rwanda's Akagera National Park, home to the country's savannah-adapted species. Stretching across a vast expanse of low-lying mountains and savannah plains, the park takes in the rolling highlands woodlands, swamp-fringed lakes, and wetlands of the Kagera River along the way. You'll have sightings of crocodiles and hippos wallowing in the park's watery basins. On twice daily game drives during your 3 nights at Magashi Camp you will see lion, leopard, elephant, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and other animals roam across its grassy plains and acacia forests. Following an overnight in Kigali, your adventure continues as you journey south, with a stop at the King's Palace, to Nyungwe, a vast area of mountain rainforest, and home to owl-faced and colobus monkeys as well as Rwanda's chimp population. You'll spend a morning trekking chimps through the forests. The region is also home to over 300 species of birds of which about 26 are endemic to the Albertine rift. Take in the incredible sightings during your chimp trek and canopy walk or from the comfort of your room during your 2 night stat at Nyungwe House. A 2.5 hour drive will bring you to the shores of Lake Kivu for a relaxing overnight at the Serena. Tanganyika Wilderness Safari

Accommodations are comfortable and in the best safari locations across northern Tanzania. The safari starts with 2 nights in Tarangire, a day in Lake Manyara and 2 nights at the Ngorongoro Crater before moving on to spend a final fantastic 4 nights in the Serengeti. You will be accompanied by a highly trained guide/naturalist/driver for the duration of your safari so you have the full benefit of an on-going relationship and education with your guide. Your private vehicle is a comfortable 4x4 vehicle, with pop-up roof with plenty of room for 6 adults, seated in 3 rows of 2 (so everyone has a window seat). We have designed the itinerary to follow the migration, so will substitute the Serengeti camps to maximize your opportunity to witness this great event. There are no set departure dates and the itinerary is flexible if you wish to add nights on safari, a hot-air balloon ride, or spend a few extra days at the beach to rest and relax before returning home. Primates and Wildlife

Next up is game viewing as you travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park with a chance to see the rare Ugandan cob along with elephants and buffalo. Then it’s on to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a region of volcanoes, jagged valleys, waterfalls, lakes and dramatic mountain ranges. Here you’ll stay at Bwindi Lodge offering dramatic views of the impenetrable forest and a great place to spot the monkeys and birds hidden in the foliage. This will be your base for two nights where on the second day you will experience a unique encounter with the mountain gorillas as you trek through the dense forest. Your primate adventure continues with a drive through the forest to Mount Mgahinga National Park where you’ll stay at the Volcanoes Mount Gahinga lodge. Nestled at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes you will have a chance to enter the forest in search of the endangered Golden Monkey followed by spending time with the local Batwa community and experiencing their culture and stories firsthand.
Gorillas of Rwanda

The next morning you set off on a scenic 3 hour drive to Virunga, certain to lift your spirits which will be soaring by the time you check in to your Lodge situated against the backdrop of the Virunga Mountains. On Day 3, in the same rainforest that Dian Fossey had her ground breaking encounters with with gorillas, you will get up close and personal with the rare mountain gorilla. Rafiki Safari

Each of the camps and lodges in this itinerary has its own individual style and charm, offering experiences that make it completely unique. Amboseli is known for its magnificent elephants (a population of over 1000 elephants reside in the parks eco-system), while walking safaris with local Maasai guides provide intimate insight into the local Maasai culture. In the Lewa Conservancy, you are privy to some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing that Kenya has to offer: lion, leopard and jackal thrive on the rich diversity of prey that inhabits the area.
